Fall Festival of Shakespeare
Ah sleep... This weekend I've gotten a lot of sleep :) It's nice!
Fall Festival went really well. The 10 schools each performed their shows at their own schools on the weekend of November 14-17. Then, after each school closed, their props, set and costumes were put into trucks and loaded into S & Co in preparation for Festival weekend. My bragging rights include fitting an entire show (2 laundry baskets of shoes, 1 of hats and the costumes for 30 kids) into my little 4 door Chevy Prism.
The week before Festival was nice- dry techs and wet techs at Founders' Theatre. Fairly relaxing. Then Festival weekend: 10 shows from 6:30pm Thursday through 5pm on Sunday. A half hour for each changeover. The costume department is so well-oiled that it took 20 minutes to strike the show, sort laundry/dry cleaning/restock, move from the theatre to the shop and start laundry.
The Festival itself was amazing, and pretty awe-inspiring. The main part of the theatre filled with over a hundred high school students, watching Shakespeare and cheering like they're at a rock concert. And they GOT it. All of them, the performers and the audience, knew what they were talking about. The kids were cheering the heros, "aww"ing at the romance, and hissing at the villains. They were on their feet for the end of every performance. One of the employees took a time lapse video of the entire weekend.
I took photos of both of the shows I designed: Lenox High and Chatham High. Both did Hamlet!

Where has the time gone?!
It seems like I was just home... and it was warm....
It snowed here yesterday. It looks beautiful, with all the trees and things covered in snow... but it's cold. I don't like cold. So I'm wrapping up in a sweater and trying to stay indoors (at least until the wind stops blowing snow into my face).
From back home: Caroline, or Change (the show I assisted in August-September this year) had a couple special guests for their closing night performance. A wonderful end to an amazing show.
For those of you who don't know what I'm doing out here, a brief recap. I'm working at the Fall Festival of Shakespeare at Shakespeare and Co (where I've worked for the past 2 summers). It's basically a program where S&Co sends teams of directors, costumers and set/props people to 10 area high schools, where they put on a 90 minute cut of a Shakespeare play. At the end of the program, each school has a few performances at their own school, and the festival culminates with all of the schools coming together and performing for each other on the mainstage at S&Co. Once the show opens, everything (acting, crews, board ops, stage managing, EVERYTHING) is done by the students. It's a really powerful experience.
So, for this festival, I'm designing the costumes for 2 of the high schools: Chatham (which is in upstate NY), and Lenox (which is the town where I'm based). By the luck of the draw, they are both doing Hamlet. It's a cool experience for me, because even though they are doing the same play, the cuts are different, and the concept for each is completely different. One school is setting their Hamlet in the 1990s, and the other is in its' own world, but sort of reminiscent of the 1800s.
Things are going well here. I'm starting to hit the point of "tech starts next Friday (!!!!)", but I feel prepared. Fittings for 1 school are done, and done except for a few stragglers at the other. I get to spend all day Thursday, Friday, and part of Saturday doing alterations (yea! I get to sew :) and then tech starts next week for 1 school and the following Tuesday for the other. It will be a busy few weeks, but completely worth it. I love working with kids, and this experience is beyond words.

New House!!
I figured I should post pics of our new place before I leave it for 2 months...

So that's our new place! We moved in over the rainiest weekend in Chicago's recorded history. It is very much worth it though-it's much nicer to be able to spread out and have a place to put everything!
My next post will be from Massachusetts-I leave on Saturday for a 2 month job. I'm really looking forward to it-I'll be designing for the first time in a couple of years.

Dragon*Con
My weekend in Atlanta:
Andy and I left Chicago at about 8:30 on Thursday night. We arrived to meet our group in Normal and left at 1am. We then drove straight through to Atlanta. We got there, and fun commenced!
One of the best nights was Saturday night. We went to the "Colonial Fleet Party" for Battlestar Galactica fans. About 5 minutes after we showed up, who else showed up but Edward James Olmos, James Callis, Michael Hogan, Tahmoh Penikett, and Aaron Douglas (who, incidentally, was staying 2 doors away from us and saw us in the hall many times :) Edward James Olmos made a speech about how BSG brought sci-fi to a whole new level, and at the end, led us in a chant of "So say we all". Pretty amazing... someone posted it (part one and two) on YouTube. Be warned-if you are a BSG fan, there are some pretty big spoilers in his speech.
The next day I went to the walk of fame. Some people I wanted to meet weren't there, but I did get to meet Michael Dorn, Michael Rosenbaum and Tim Russ. Tim Russ was so nice! He asked my name and we got to chat geek chat about Star Trek.
I also went to some different panels in the few days we were there. One on corset-making, which offered some pretty good tips on supplies and construction. Another on Neil Gaimon and his works, which was fun :) And many others.
On Sunday I also got to have breakfast with Chris!!! It was a lot of fun catching up... I miss people. I have to get better about staying in touch.

Tech week...
Yeah... you really have to be crazy to have this life. A few weeks of nicely paced work, and then suddenly it's way too many hours to be working in one week.
Tech is going well, though. The show is going to be amazing! We have final dress with photo call tomorrow night, and then previews start Thursday. We officially open on September 20th.
Dragon*Con was AWESOME. No other words. To sum up: I got to be a geeky fangirl for a whole weekend and dress up in lots of fun costumes :) I had a great (tho short) visit with Chris :) I also met some celebrities and saw some outstanding costumes. I have pictures up on Facebook, and I will post some here, as well as go into greater detail about the whole weekend, when it's not 1:30 AM.
